RESOLUTION NO. 1111
A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF
TIBURON URGING SUPPORT FOR THE PROPOSED REFERENDUM
ADVOCATING REPEAL OF SB 200 (PERIPHERAL CANAL)
WHEREAS, the Department of Water Resources projected completion
of the Peripheral Canal and associated dams and reservoirs would cost
approximately $23 billion to construct; and
WHEREAS, such a project would foster and encourage already
excessively congested growth in Southern California; and
WHEREAS, escalating costs of project water will encourage
already excessive groundwater pumping in the San Joaquin Valley to increase
still further, and thereby cause even further damage to California's
increasingly eroded environment; and
WHEREAS, special corporate 'agribusiness' interests uses 85%
of all water consumed in California but would be unable to pay the true
costs of water from an expanded State Water Project, thereby causing much
of the above mentioned $23 billion to be borne by citizens and taxpayers
unjustly and inequitably throughout the State; and
WHEREAS, the completion of such a State Water Project would
have a detrimental effect upon San Francisco Bay and its marine life by
altering, to a large degree, the salt water and fresh water mixture that
now exists.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Town Council of the
Town of Tiburon, in the interest of assuring future adequate water supply
for all Californians through non-structural alternatives such as increased
conservation practfce, reclamation, market transfers and sound, progressive
groundwater management, does support the placing of a Referendum on the
November 1980 ballot which proposes to repeal the Peripheral Canal Program
(SB'200); and does hereby urge all citizens in the Town of Tiburon to
lend their support for the Referendum as well.
PASSED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the Town Council of
the Town of Tiburon, held on September 3 ,1980, by the following
vote:

ABSENT: COUNCIIMEMBERS: Rockey, Bass
