RESOLUTION NO.~
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
TIBURON CALLING FOR PUBLIC INFOR:MA.TION AND DIS-
CUSSION OF THE NUCLEAR SAFEGUARDS INITIATIVE
WHEREAS, the present energy crisis is now widely recognized as a real
and an important national problem with significant State and local implications;
and
WHEREAS, nuclear power generation has been proposed for a major role
in solving this energy crisis; and
WHEREAS, nuclear power has been called on one hand safe, cheap, and
clean, and on the other hand it has been called dangerous, expensive, and having
a long-lived radioactive waste legacy; and
WHEREAS, respected and responsible scientists have allied themselves
in large numbers on both sides of the controversy; and
WHEREAS, experts on both sides have advocated that the public, not
the experts alone, should decide the matter of nuclear power; and
WHEREAS, a nuclear safeguards initiative measure has qualified for
the June, 1976, primary election in California; and
WHEREAS, the existence of an informed and alert citizenry is the
cornerstone of democracy:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Tiburon City Council of the
City of Tiburon does hereby:
1. Urge all citizens to fully inform themselves on the nuclear issue by
attending and/or studying the forthcoming hearings on the Nuclear Safeguards
Initiative (to be held by the Assembly Committee on Energy and Diminishing
Materials beginning October 14 in Sacramento), and
2. Urge the media to publicize the hearing dates, and to report the testi-
mony and findings as fully as possible, and
3. Offer to make available in the City Clerk's office of the City of Tiburon
a State supplied copy of the record of these hearings so that citizens not
otherwise informed may study it in their local Government offices, and
4. Commend the participation of citizens in this Bicentennial-year decision
on our energy future, which constitutes an example of our best and most in-
formed democratic tradition.
PASSED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the City Council of the
City of Tiburon held on October 27, 1975, by the following vote:
