California has the 29th-highest rate of gun homicides and gun assaults in the US; and WHEREAS, firearms are now the number one cause of death for children (ages 1-19 years old) in the United States as of 2020, surpassing automobile accidents, disease, and other injuries; and WHEREAS, cities across the nation, including Tiburon, and non-partisan grassroots organizations such as Marin Moms Demand Action and League of Women Voters Marin County are working in communities to encourage responsible gun ownership, and to end the senseless violence with evidence-based solutions; and WHEREAS, support for the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens goes hand-in-hand with keeping guns away from people with dangerous histories; and WHEREAS, protecting public safety is TPD, the Mayor, and Town Council’s highest priority; and WHEREAS, gun violence prevention is more important than ever, as gun violence has risen with increased gun sales, and with increased calls to suicide and domestic violence hotlines; and WHEREAS, in January 2013, Hadiya Pendleton was tragically shot and killed at age 15; and on June 2, 2023 to recognize the birthday of Hadiya, people across the United States will recognize National Gun Violence Awareness Day and Wear Orange Weekend in tribute to Hadiya, other victims of gun violence, and their loved ones; and WHEREAS, the Wear Orange idea was inspired by a group of Hadiya’s friends, who asked their classmates to commemorate her life by wearing orange; they chose this color because hunters wear orange to announce themselves to other hunters when out in the woods, and orange is a color that symbolizes the value of human life; and WHEREAS, anyone can join this campaign by pledging to wear orange on June 2nd, the first Friday in June in 2023 and during the Wear Orange weekend, to help raise awareness about gun violence; and DocuSign Envelope ID: F950815E-0D7C-4ADF-A963-AD01B7F88549 Page 2 of 2 Town Council Resolution No. 23-2023 05/22/2023 WHEREAS, we renew our commitment to reduce gun violence and pledge to do all we can to keep firearms out of the wrong hands and encourage responsible gun ownership to help keep our children safe.
