HomeMy WebLinkAboutTC Res 1992-12-02 r r lr' RESOLUTION NO. 2893 A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF TIBURON DECLARING THE DESIRE OF THE TOWN COUNCIL TO SEE FOGHORNS MAINTAIN THEIR PRESJ!:NCE ON SAN FRANCISCO BAY, AND URGING SAN FRANCISCO BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD, AND THE GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL RECREATION AREA TO WORK WITH THE S. F. BASED U. S. UGHTHOUSE SOCIETY AND ANY OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES TO ACCOMPLISH THIS; URGING THE S. F. CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION TO WORK WITH THE U. S. COAST GUARD AND THE GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL RECREATION AREA TO EXPEDITE ANY NECESSARY APPROVALS FOR FOGHORN INSTALLATION WHEREAS, foghorns on San Francisco Bay have guided countless seafarers since 1857 and are part of San Francisco's history, culture and fabric, and WHEREAS, foghorns on San Francisco Bay are as integral to the character and personality of the City as are its cable cars, neighborhoods, bridges and hills, and WHEREAS, the United States Coast Guard has removed its lat remaining foghorns and replaced them with electronic devices producing high pitched - sounds which will eventually be themselves removed as technology renders any sort of sound device for fog navigation obsolete, and WHEREAS, foghorns continue to be operated at various locations around the San Francisco Bay by a variety of private and public interests but are gradually being removed, and WHEREAS, the U. S. Lighthouse Society is working diligently to maintain a vibrant foghorn chorus on the Bay and has expressed a willingness to pay for the installation and maintenance of traditional foghorns on the Bay to accomplish this, and WHEREAS, despite the progress and pace of technology, the people of San Francisco find the comfort of traditional foghorn sounds as part of the San Francisco experience, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Town Council of the Town of Tiburon declares its wish that foghorns maintain their historic presence on the San Francisco Bay, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Town Council urges the Mayor of San Francisco to urge the Port of San Francisco, any other appropriate City departments and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to work with the U. S. Lighthouse Society and any other interested party to locate potential site(s) for foghorn installation, and r r lr BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Town Council urges the Mayor of San Francisco to urge the U. S. Coast Guard to approve the necessary permits allowing for foghorn installation and operation on the San Francisco Bay, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Town Council urges the Mayor of San Francisco to urge the San Francisco Congressional Delegation to work with the U. S. Coast Guard and Golden Gate National Recreation Area to expedite any necessary approval for foghorn installation on the San Francisco Bay, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the Tiburon Town Council send copies of this Resolution to the U. S. Lighthouse Society, the U. S. Coast Guard, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the San Francisco Congressional Delegation.
