RESOLUTION NO. 36-2024
A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF TIBURON COMMENDING ANGEL ISLAND TIBURON FERRY UPON ITS SELECTION AS THE 2024 TIBURON PENINSULA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUSINESS OF THE YEAR WHEREAS, family-owned and operated Angel Island Tiburon Ferry has been a local institution
since its founding by Milton McDonough in 1959; and
WHEREAS, Angel Island Tiburon Ferry’s rich local history begins even earlier in the 1930s with Milton McDonough’s father, Sam McDonough II, a.k.a. Sammy the Skiffman; and
WHEREAS, Sammy the Skiffman was a fixture in these waters in his day – he spent his days transporting personnel and supplies to the military stationed on Angel Island and even played a
part in the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge by ferrying workers between the two towers;
and
WHEREAS, in 1959, Captain Milton McDonough founded Angel Island Tiburon Ferry in offices in a classic Tiburon Ark, and named his first official vessel The Gaycin, after his nieces Gail and Cindy. He made $7 on his first day in business; and
WHEREAS, the Angel Island, launched in April 1975, is still in service, and has taken
thousands of happy visitors to Angel Island State Park, connecting Tiburon to the Jewel of San Francisco Bay for hiking, biking, picnicking, and learning our local history; and
WHEREAS, the Angel Island Tiburon Ferry, under the leadership of Captain Maggie McDonough, has built a long-lasting and meaningful relationship with the Tiburon community,
creating camaraderie through their collaborations with local businesses, and enabling friends and family to come together on the beloved waters of the San Francisco Bay; and
WHEREAS, Captain Maggie has displayed boatloads of commitment to community service, by supporting local events, providing transportation for charitable causes, facilitating educational trips for schools and youth groups, and further strengthened the bonds of community and
fellowship by her efforts to ensure that everyone, regardless of financial means, can experience
the cultural and national heritage of Angel Island; and
WHEREAS, Angel Island Tiburon Ferry will soon make history as the first short-run ferry service in California to convert its fleet to zero-emission, which will significantly reduce the region’s carbon footprint and set a new standard for maritime environmental practices.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Town Council of the Town of Tiburon hereby commends Angel Island Tiburon Ferry on its well-deserved selection as the Chamber’s 2024 Business of the Year and expresses its sincere appreciation to Angel Island Tiburon Ferry for its contributions to the quality of life in the Town of Tiburon.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Town Council congratulates the Angel Island, once
known as the “Green Cloud” for its green and silver color scheme, on its historic evolution into a
zero-emission “green” ferry and expresses its hope that the Angel Island will once again become

known as the “Green Cloud” in the San Francisco Bay, in tribute to its history and in honor of its sustainable future.
PASSED AND ADOPTED on this 6th day of November, 2024.
