1. Minutes – Adopted minutes of February 27 meeting (Town Liaison to H&A, Patti Pickett)
2. Treasurers Report– (Town Liaison to H&A, Patti Pickett)
Pickett gave the remaining money in the general fund and explained the probable shortage of walking guides
coming up for the summer, due to the delays in finalization of the new guide. The $2500 special guide fund,
from fiscal 2017/18, has already been used, however a request was put in by Liaison Pickett for another $2500,
fiscal budget year 2018/19 (to be confirmed or denied at the budget meeting) to cover extra cost of current
guide order, plus new print costs for the new one.
ARTIST RECRUITMENT – NEW ARTIST EXHIBITION/RECEPTION
1. Lobby Artist Recruitment – Decision on Artist for April/May was made for Mike Macgruder
2. Upstairs Gallery – Photography Club – holding their Opening Reception on May 9.
ACTION ITEMS
1. Artist Laureate –
Commissioner Fong reported the results of the search for a new Artist Laureate. After a long and difficult
search, two well qualified candidates came forward.
The special sub-committee of Mayor Jim Fraser, former Artist Laureate, Jaleh Etemad, local architect and artist,
James Malott, and commissioners Fong and Mujica-Beavers met at a special meeting on April 16. Two
candidates, Ingrid Locowandt and Richard Rozen were interviewed. Both individuals had compelling
strengths that were discussed at length. Richard Rozen was chosen unanimously as their recommendation for
appointment to the Artist Laureate position to be considered at the June 6 meeting of the Tiburon Town
Council. Fong then asked that the Heritage and Arts Commission give their affirmation of this
recommendation.
Motion: Chair Hall - To support recommendation of Richard Rozen as new Tiburon Artist Laureate
2nd: Commissioner Noguez
All in favor: Aye
2. Art Educator –
Commissioner Fong reported the results of the nomination procedure for Art Educator 2018. Along with fellow
subcommittee Commissioner Mujica-Beavers, all nominees from past years as well as two new nominees from
2018 were vetted. The final choice was for Annelies Atchley, local 57 year resident who has dedicated her
professional and personal life to furthering the art education and awareness of the peninsula’s children
primarily and most recently the adult community. Fong then asked for affirmation of the Artist Educator
choice of Annelies Atchley.
Motion: Chair Hall – To accept the Art Educator 2018 nominee choice of Annelies Atchley
2nd: Commissioner Noguez
All in favor: Aye
3. Youth Art Program –
Commissioner Noguez reported the change in direction her project with the local high-schools has taken.
Through a chance discussion with a Town staff member contact was made with Jan Papirmeister and her
foundation, Youth Art For Healing. Noguez explained their mission: to team up local high schools for year-
long projects creating artworks that are then placed in hospital settings beneficial to both patients and hospital
staff. The schools work closely with the hospitals from the start, funds are raised through a foundation, a
theme is chosen, and specific areas of any given hospital participating are agreed upon. This grass-roots
program started in Maryland and the idea of Marin as their first Community Chapter will be presented to the
board at their next meeting. Noguez has reached out to Marin General and they are interested.
4. Walking Guide and H&A Brochure combination hand-out: Liaison Pickett reported that Dave Gotz, Town
Historian has been working on the historical copy. He has submitted it to the artist and we are awaiting
reformatting as to font, etc. Progress is slow due to changes and Lily’s absence. Changes to the graphics have
been conveyed as well. The new logo concept was introduced. It was decided that the older heritage look with
a modern twist was the desired message. C. Fong wanted to make sure the artwork belongs to the commission
and Town of Tiburon, and that there is no copyright issue with the artist. The commission also wanted to see a
B&W version and have the use of both in the future. Pickett asked if perhaps the logo and the “look” on the
front of the guide should have the same “feel”. The general consensus was that they should stand alone and
remain different.
Commissioner Fong asked if the guide was going to be ready for the tourist season. Liaison thought it might be
ready for the May meeting approval. Pickett still stressed the need for a “bridge” order.
5. Artwalk – C. Fong reminded the commission they had decided the Artwalk would be set aside for the time
being.
Commissioner Mujica-Beavers arrived…
6. H&A Commission Evaluation Report – due to Town Council June 30 – Liaison Pickett suggested using
former Commissioner de Quattro’s draft report, updating it and presenting it for approval at the June 26
meeting. The commission asked for a draft to be received in advance of the meeting.
7. Confirmed next meeting date: May 22, 2018.
ADJOURNMENT – 6:37PM
