RESOLUTION NO. 24-2008
A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL
OF THE TOWN OF TIBURON
IN HONOR AND MEMORY OF BEVERLY BASTIAN
WHEREAS, Beverly was a long-standing community activist who did much to improve
the life of people on the Tiburon Peninsula by working to ensure preservation of its important
historical landmarks (Old St. Hilary Church, the China Cabin, and others) and founding many of
the non-profit organizations on the Peninsula in Marin County;
WHEREAS, Beverly was as an advocate of early childhood education and established the
Belvedere Nursery School as a parent-run cooperative in; she subsequently established five more
schools in Tamalpais, Mill Valley, Strawberry, Tiburon (at Community Congregational Church)
and the Marin Child Development Center (the latter served neurologically disabled
preschoolers); and
WHEREAS, Beverly conceived and organized the Village Salvage Shop (now Tiburon
Thrift Shop) as an ecumenical, cooperative fundraising project and served as its chairman for
three years; she also owned the Custom House Antiques consignment store for many years;
WHEREAS, Beverly is best known for her association with the Landmarks Society of
Belvedere-Tiburon, the Peninsula's own private, nonprofit historical society which she helped
found in 1959 and for which she served as president for the first 10 years;
WHEREAS, Beverly Bastian also served on the boards of the California Heritage
Council, Conference of California Historical Societies and the Angel Island Association; and she
was recently inducted into the Marin County Women's Hall of Fame;
WHEREAS, Ms. Bastian was well-known for her quick and acerbic wit, her great
intelligence, tenacity, and her ability to rally people and get things done;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Town of Tiburon mourns the loss of
Beverly Bastian and honors her memory by adjourning its meeting in her honor and commending
her accomplishments and memories to her family on behalf of the Town of Tiburon.

Tiburon held on May 7, 2008 by the following vote:
