HomeMy WebLinkAboutTC Res 1969-10-15 RESOLUTION NO. 262 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TIBURON, MARIN COUNTY, CALIFORNIA URGING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES TO EXERT THE FULL INFLUENCE OF HIS OFFICE TO EFFECT ALLOCATION OF ALREADY AVAILABLE FUNDS, WHICH ARE UNDER THE AD- MINISTRATION OF THE BUREAU OF THE BUDGET, TO COMPLETE THE PURCHASE OF THE PT. REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE TO THE LIMITS ESTABLISHED BY FEDERAL LEGISLATION IN 1962. WHEREAS, the Pt. Reyes Peninsula in Marin County, California has been recognized throughout the world as a true "island in time" ; and WHEREAS, the Pt. Reyes National Seashore was created to effectively preserve this unique area for all time and all generations in its natural state; and WHEREAS, the Pt. Reyes National Seashore is within two hour's drive of any point within the San Francisco urban area where 3,000,000 people presently live and where 7,000,000 are anticipated in the next 30 years; and WHEREAS, the income to the Land and Water Conservation Fund is presently over 200 million dollars a year which funds are expressly for the purchase of federal and state park lands to keep pace with the burgeoning population; and WHEREAS, land prices of the private property within the limits of the Pt. Reyes National Seashore have escalated 400% in the past 7 year~. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: THAT the City Council of the City of Tiburon, Marin County, California does respectfully urge the President of the United States to examine the issue now brought before him. IN THE LIGHT of the factors of urban population pressures and the need for easily accessible open space of the kind requiring very low improvement and maintenance costs; and IN THE LIGHT of the geographical and geological uniqueness of the area involved; and IN THE LIGHT of overwhelming support from the entire San Francisco Bay Area towards this acquisition; and IN THE LIGHT of the already available funds requ~r~ng no new taxes and of the clear bipartisan support for the bills now in Congress supporting this appropriation; and then TO BRING THE FULL INFLUENCE of the office of the President to bear upon the Secretary of the Interior and upon the Director of the Bureau of the Budget that they may work cooperatively with the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs and the Senate Interior and National Parks Sub-Committee to achieve full acquisiton of the presently privately held 58% of the Pt. Reyes National Seashore before the end of the 1st session of the 92nd Congress.
