HomeMy WebLinkAboutTC Res 1965-02-08 RESOLUTION NO. 55 RESOLUTION ADOPTING OFFICIAL POSITION OF THE CITY OF TIBURON PERTAINING TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF A SAN FRANCISCO-TIBURON BRIDGE WHEREAS, the construction of a San Francisco Tiburon Bridge would cause eternal damage to the natural beauty and aesthetic values of the Bay Angel Island State Park and the Tiburon Peninsula; WHEREAS, the operation of the Golden Gate Bridge is approximately at one half of its current capacrty. except on Suanday evenings, due principally to returning vacationing San Franciscans. and during four hours of each week day; due princi pal Iy to Marin Commuters, the latter comprisino at least sixty five percent of such peak load traffic; WHEREAS, an independent, world renowned engineering consultant, pursuant to thorough study and examination, has determined the feasibi I ity of constructing a second deck on the Golden Gate Bridge, increasing its capacity by eighty ,five percent, and that such construction could be financed with the District1s current capabi I ities; WHEREAS, a real istic estimate of construction and land acquisition costs for a second crossing far exceed known funding campabi I ities. due to the inadequacy of the combined revenues. regardless of tol Is, of the Golden Gate Bridge and any new bridge; WHEREAS. the electrorate having recently voted overwhelmingly to establ ish a Marin County Transit District; WHEREAS~ recent, as wet I as expected, technological advancements have indicated the economic feasibi I ity of developing water (as wet I as air in the more distant future) commuter vehicles; and WHEREAS. al I professional studies conducted to date have clearly demonstrated no reasonable method of bringing rai I rapid transit to Marin County in the foresee.. able future; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the City of Tlburon recommends the immediate establish- ment of an efficient, low fare transportation system by the Marin County Transft District, to be operated uti I izing the five cent property tax recently authorized by the voters; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the City of Tiburon recommends the immediate construction of a second deck on the Golden Gate Bridge, including acceptable terminal approaches, as the on I y f i nanc j a II y practica I "bri dge" sol ut i on presented to date; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the City of Tiburon recommends further study to increase the usage of the San Rafael-Richmond Bridge, including feasibi I ity studies of connecting the eastern terminus of this bridge with the San Francisco Bay Bridge; or an added paral lei bridge (Behr Plan) BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the City of Tiburon recommends further study as to the desirabi I ity and feasibi lity of bringing rai I rapid transit to Marin County' and THEREFORE, BE IT MADE KNOWN, the City of Tiburon opposes and wi I I actively resist any proposal to study the construction of a San Francisco-Tiburon Bridge.
