HomeMy WebLinkAboutTC Res 1973-02-13 (3) PESOLUTIO~ NO.~ A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY aJUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TIBURON REQUESTING THE STATE LEGISlATURE TO PROVIDE IMMEDIATE FUNDING TO SAFEGUARD DOYLE DRIVE. WHEREAS: the San Francisco approach to the COlden Gate Bridge known as Doyle Drive is traversed daily by commuter-residents of Tiburon and Marin County who are exposed daily to loss of life and serious injury; and WHEREAS: Doyle Drive has become one of tne most dangerous short stretches of roadway in the State resulting in seventeen fatalities since 1969 and four hundred ten accidents since 1967 due to the narrow lanes and lack of barriers separating the nor,.n and south lanes; and WHEREAS our community was deeply shocked and saddened by the recent fatal accident on Doyle Drive which took the life of our dear friend and neighbor Arnt H. Tjensvold and another autoist; and WHEREAS: for many years no action has been taken to correct the dangerous condition of ~oyle Drive;and WHEREA~ the State Highway Commission has been repeatedly impor- tuned to widen the traffic lanes and construct a barrier separating traffic moving in opposite directions; and WHEREAS: the State Highway Commission under present scheduling will not undertake corrective action for the next three years; and WHEREAS: State Senator Milton Marks and Assemblyman John Foran have introduced emergency companion bills in the State Legislature (SB l47 and AB 211) requiring the State Highway Commission, in this fiscal year, to fund and contract for the improvement of Doyle Drive; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: 1. The State Highway Commission is asked to change its order of priorities and commence construction for the safeguarding of Doyle Drive at the earliest possible time. 2. The Legislature is asked to enact the Marks-Foran legislation. 3. The City Council c~msnds the various county Boards of Super- visors, City Councils, Chambers of Co~erce, labor and business organizations, and the National Safety Council for adopting resolutions having the same purport as this Resolution, and urges other governmental and private organi- zations to follow suit. 4. Commends the State Highway Department for setting up, beginning this date, a buffer zone during certain hours as a temporary plan to allevi- ate the dangerous condition of Doyle Drive. 5. A copy of this Resolution be transmitted by the City Manager to the State Highway Commission, the Board of Directors of the Golden Gate Bridge District, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the State Assembly, local radio, television stations and newspapers.
