TIBURON CYES 2010
In 2010, Rising Sun Energy Center continued to offer residences free energy conservation services and hardware by running
the California Youth Energy Services (CYES) program in Marin County for its fifth year. CYES hires and trains local youth to
provide free in-home energy education and hardware installation to homeowners and renters.
The CYES program demonstrated high success in 2010 in Marin County by:
• Providing employment and training to 10 youth, ages 15-22
• Providing 268 households with energy saving hardware and information, 8 of which were in the Town of Tiburon
MATERIALS INSTALLED: Energy Specialists installed the following materials in 8 Tiburon homes at no cost:
• 69 Compact fluorescent lamps
• 5 Eff icient-flow showerheads &
aerators
• 1 Retractable clothesline
• 6 CFL torchiere lamps
• 5 Powerstrips

The installation of these measures resulted in an annual energy reduction of 7,257 kWh, 14 therms and 4 gallons of water
per minute, thereby reducing 5.27 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. This is equivalent to one
of the following C02greenhouse gas emissions'
• C02 emissions from 593 gallons of gasoline
• C02 emissions from 12.3 barrels of oil consumed
CLIENT FEEDBACK
At each Green House Call, a pre-stamped client feedback card is left to.solicit client feedback and referrals. In 2010, 100%
of the Marin client feedback cards rated the overall program quality as good or excellent. See some of the feedback from
Tiburon clients:
"It's great to see a program that trains college students about energy consumption and savings, and their ability to pass it
on."
"Excellent service, great information. Thank you."

The purpose of this letter is to inform you the Marin County Hazardous and
Dan Schwarz
Solid Waste Joint Powers Authority's (JPA) took action at their January 13,
Mill Valley:
2011 meeting to allocate funds to assist in outreach efforts on the County's
Jim McCann
single bag ordinance. Specifically, the JPA budgeted $25,000 for single use
bag ban ordinance outreach and educational materials to retailers.
Novato:
Michael Frank
The JPA began providing bags to the public in 2007. They have since' handed
out approximately 12,000 reusable, locally manufactured, canvas shopping

markets, through the Marin Food Bank, and through various community groups
and events. The program has been costing $10,000 annually to purchase

3,000 bags. The bag distribution has been well received in the community but
may be reaching a saturation point necessitating a shift in efforts.
San Rafael:
Jim Schutz
The County of Marin's recent action to move forward and ass its own sin le

use bag ordinance has already generated a dialogue within the community.
Sausalito:
Recognizing this, it may be an optimal time to enhance the JPA's bag handout

program with outreach and educational materials to retailers to educate them
about coming changes and to help promote reuse. '
Tiburon:
Margaret Curran
JPA staff will be in contact with Stacy Carlsen of Weights and Measure to
discuss next steps in developing and implementing this outreach.
