Your letter described the potential for traffic collisions near your home at 4887 Paradise Drive. While we certainly appreciate your concerns, this particular section of Paradise Drive is located outside Town limits, and so there is nothing the Town can offer as a possible resolution of the situation Because this particular section of Paradise Drive is maintained by the County of Marin, you may wish to contact Craig Parmley, Superintendent of Public Works, County of Marin, (415) 499-7512, cparmle a,co.marin.ca.us, in order to make him aware of any traffic hazards that may exist, as well as your suggestions for an effective solution. Thank you for taking proactive steps to improve public safety. Your efforts are appreciated. Thank You Chief Cronin for the new street signage - School Zone, 15 MPH & "No School Pick-Up or Drop-Off on Corte Palos Verdes" - to keep the walking, biking and scootering platoon of students safe each morning and each afternoon. Thank You Superintendent Herzog for our terrific team of crossing guards who care for the neighborhood children each morning and each afternoon. Thank You Principal Purcell for using your first School Assembly this fall to educate the kids about using sidewalks & crossing guards when commuting to school and to advise their parents not to use Corte Palos Verdes for this reason. I think we will all breathe a little easier each day when our children walk out into the street. Thank you all so much for your help in making this happen. Superintendent Herzog, Chief Cronin & Principal Purcell '/3 Thank you again for meeting with the neighbors of Corte Palos Verdes this morning to come up with an action plan to keep children safe when walking and biking to and from Bel Aire School. Clearly we all are in agreement that if 50+ children twice each day continue to maneuver among and around moving and parked cars and SUVs with no sidewalk or side lane to protect them - we are risking a tragedy. I think that together we have made progress towards a meaningful solution for the children, for the school and for our community. Chief Cronin - thank you for thinking of so many ways to address this safety issue and leading the effort to: 1) Designate Corte Palos Verdes as an official "School Zone" with a reduced speed limit of 15 miles per hour and proper signage 2) Meeting with traffic officials to discuss limiting traffic flow on Corte Palos Verdes during school commuting hours of 7:30-8:30am and 1:30-3:30pm when children are most vulnerable 3) Beginning a discussion with the town on the feasibility of a sidewalk (concrete or simply painted) along Corte Palos Verdes to keep children away from moving vehicles. The neighborhood favors concrete as the passage is more protected - and also allows for parking on both sides of the street Superintendent Herzog - thank you for your continued concern for the safety of district children and for your commitment to: 1) Communicate with district parents via Headline News (done last week - thank you) and other district communications encouraging parents to avoid using Corte Palos Verdes as a drop-off and pick-up zone and to instead use neighborhood streets with sidewalks and crosswalks to keep the children safe 2) Encourage the possibility of a crossing guard stationed to support the children who flow through the intersection of Reed Ranch Road and Corte Palos Verdes 43 3) Generously volunteer your own time "on the street" the first day of school to demonstrate the district's commitment to keeping the children safe Principal Purcell - thank you for seeing all of this through the eyes of the children and your student-minded ideas to: 1) More directly educate the children on how to walk and ride safely to and from school 2) Encourage the children to be their own advocates in future discussions regarding traffic safety Together our genuine desire to keep the children safe and our openness to new ideas will soon (we hope!) result in meaningful change for our community. 3/3 DIGEST Peggy Curran From: Harvey Rogers [harvnan2@sprynet.com] Sent: Tuesday, September 27, 2011 7:27 PM To: Peggy Curran; grodericks@cityofbelvedere.org; 'Jill Einstein' Subject: SUMMER PROGRESS AT BLACKIE'S GARDEN + FUTURE PLANS FROM HARVEY ROGERS Hi Peggy, George, & Jill, During June, July, August & Sept we had one (different) volunteer every week either watering by hose to supplement the drip irrigation (on a Friday or Saturday). In addition for those 4 months we had a minimum of 3 volunteers at the garden every week weeding, deadheading (pruning the flowers) trimming the plants, removing dead plants, tuning the drip irrigation system etc. and planting new plants. For October we have many plants on order & will need new top soil for one area. At one area we now have about 18 new dwarf Aloe. that has a orange / red bloom that is suppose to bloom 10 months a year. But Kevin - the owner of Green Jeans told me do not be surprised if they will bloom all year long ! We have on order 28 more for another area. They make a outstanding show/ There are many plants still in bloom right now. Also in October I will be giving another tour of the garden. ALSO in the berm area we received a grant from the Rocky foundation to clear scotch broom, french bloom & invasive unwanted non native plants. We plan to plant wildflowers including California poppies in early November + plantsthat should be established by our winter rains & require summer water (We are working on a list of those plants now) This is a huge project - could take 3 years to be established (size of a football field. Our volunteers will be contributing their work besides other workers. Arlene Nielson - president of Tiburon Peninsula Foundation has also received this report but includes expenses for Sept.
