RESOLUTION NO, 49-2001
A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOwN
OF TIBURON DESIGNATING PROFESSOR JAMES YEH-JAU LID AS THE
TOWN OF TIBURON'S ARTIST LAUREAtE. . "
WHEREAS, Professor Yeh-Jau Liu was born in 1910 in Hunll!lf>rovi.nc~llJ1dlitthe ageofl.9; began.
his formal studies in Hangchow Art Academy as the student of two ofChina's:,~test contemPorliryaitists, .
and then continued to master his craft at the prestigious Imperial Academy of Arls'hlTokyo, Japai,; and' "
WHEREAS, after serving in several important official posts in his homeland, in 196Q J'!:9fc,ssorUu
accepted an invitation from San Francisco State University to hold a show at the University ~la;tet tci:teach
the techniques and appreciation of the distinctive art of brush painting; and . " .
WHEREAS Professor Liu moved to Tiburon several years later and established hi~ !:l!'JI~~yi Studio
at 34 Main Street where he has been active in and supportive of the Tiburon busines~~or1'\lUnity for,34 years
and where he has continued to paint every day the beautiful landscapes of Belvedere ariilTiburon; .and
WHEREAS he has been widely recognized as a master calligrapher and the first to develop the
broad-brush landscape painting technique which graces his coveted depictions of the beauty of Belvedere and
Tiburon; and
WHEREAS Professor Liu has staged personal exhibitions of his works in Korea and ~al1ar\ as well as
in Taiwan where he produced retrospective exhibitions of his paintings at the Taipei Fine Arts ~useum and
at the National Art Gallery in the National Museum of History in Taipei; and

WHEREAS his works are collected by national museums, art institutes and private individuals; and
WHEREAS, a "Laureate" is defined as one who is honored for achievements, especially in the arts or
science, and often crowned with laurels as a mark of that honor, . .
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Town Council of the Town ofTiburon does
hereby express on behalf of the citizens ofTiburon its sincere appreciation for the cross-cultural gift of his
artwork that Professor Liu has offered us for more than thirty years, and .
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Town Council of the Town ofTiburon does hereby appoint
Professor Yeh-Jau Liu as Tiburon's Artist Laureate and does hereby bestow upon him the symbolic laurel
wreath as a sign of that office,
PASSED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the Town Council of the Town of Tiburon on
September 5, 200 I, by the following vote:
